Sinai and the Sawa Camp was a nice relaxing time on the water even if the area was really unstable. When I got off the ferry in Nuweiba I expected a modern city with normal taxis. What I found was armored cars, military roadblocks, and no official taxis. There are basically a bunch of guys with their cars waiting for people of the port to drive them around. They have meters so make sure you are ready to haggle on the price.
Was the area safe? I can’t really say for sure but at no point did I feel that I was in danger. If at all possible you should have your hotel or camp arrange for a driver to pick you up and take you there. Even though the Sawa Camp is pretty famous I had to talk to five drivers before finding one that knew where was. I paid the driver way too much for the trip but the fairy I was on the arrived very late at night so I had no other choice. This is not an area where you can just show up without plans and expect everything to be alright.
Once I was safely at the camp everything went much better and I had a great time. The camp had no Internet and limited power but you go to these camps to be off the grid. The weather was wonderful so I had no problem sleeping in because there are no cars on the road and no power at night when you can hear is the sound of the ocean. These camps are kind of a all-inclusive set up so you will spend all of your time at the camp and eating at their restaurant. But the food that they had was actually pretty cheap and incredibly good and once you’re at the camp you can talk to the owner or staff to arrange trips or cars for you which is really the best and safest thing to do.
