Fethiye, Turkey

Fethiye, the most relaxed I have been in a long time. Welcome to the off season in a town that pretty much lives for tourists. What does everyone do when the tourists are not there? Pretty much nothing, and you can too.

Fethiye was one of the places where I ended up alone. I booked a 8 bed dorm room just to have it all to myself, and it cost me almost nothing. Not to mention that the prices of things in town like food and coffee are actually cheaper in the off season.

Id say that most people come to Fethiye for the boats and trips on them considering there are hundreds of them along the docks. But of course since I was there in February they were all docked for the winter and none of them running. So the boats were not an option. But town town was alive with locals all super happy to not be flooded with tourist. The dock side cafes were all packed with people all day long just reading, playing backgammon, and drinking tea. So thats what I did. Its true that most days I just sat and read and had tea all day. But I also took the time to visit the tombs up on the hillside, the local farmers market, and the nearby beaches.

I really loved it here because it reminded me of home a little being oceanside. The weather was actually really quite wonderful in late February it is just the water that is cold that keeps the tourists away. I would love to go back and just sit in my favorite cafe again and read.
